Amish Baked Custard

Posted on January 24, 2026 by Admin

Amish baked custard is a rich, creamy dessert that’s a classic in Amish kitchens. It’s simple, comforting, and made with ingredients you likely already have in your pantry. Here’s a traditional recipe for Amish baked custard:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • Ground cinnamon (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 1 1/2-quart or 2-quart baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Mix the Custard:
    • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    • Gradually add the milk and whisk until everything is well combined.
  3. Prepare the Baking Dish:
    • Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. Bake the Custard:
    • Place the baking dish in a larger pan or roasting pan, and fill the outer pan with hot water about halfway up the sides of the custard dish (this is called a water bath). It helps cook the custard evenly and prevents curdling.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the custard is set. You can test it by inserting a knife or toothpick in the center—if it comes out clean, it’s ready.
  5. Cool and Serve:
    • Once done, remove the custard from the oven and the water bath. Allow it to cool at room temperature for about 15 minutes, then chill it in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving.
    • Optionally, sprinkle with a little ground cinnamon or nutmeg before serving.

Notes:

  • Texture Tip: Amish baked custard has a smooth and velvety texture. If you prefer it even creamier, you can try using heavy cream in place of some or all of the milk.
  • Flavor Variations: Some recipes include a splash of maple syrup or coconut extract for extra flavor, so feel free to experiment!

This dessert is perfect for holidays, family gatherings, or when you’re craving a comforting, homemade treat. Enjoy!
