Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients

Beef & Marinade

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Stir-Fry

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 bell peppers (green + red), sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced (optional but great)

Sauce

  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp black pepper (or more for heat)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef
    Toss beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, and oil. Let sit 15–20 minutes.
  2. Sear the beef
    Heat wok or large skillet over high heat until very hot. Add oil.
    Sear beef quickly (1–2 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
  3. Stir-fry veggies
    Add a bit more oil if needed. Cook onions and peppers 2–3 minutes until crisp-tender. Add garlic and ginger; stir 30 seconds.
  4. Sauce it up
    Whisk sauce ingredients. Pour into pan and bring to a simmer.
  5. Finish
    Return beef to pan. Toss until sauce thickens and coats everything—about 1–2 minutes.
  6. Serve sizzling
    Spoon over hot steamed rice or noodles.

  • Slice beef partially frozen for ultra-thin cuts
  • Use green bell pepper only for old-school restaurant flavor
