If the eggs have a green ring around their yolk, it means that

Posted on January 26, 2026 by Admin

…it means the eggs were overcooked 🥚

That green or gray ring around the yolk forms when:

  • Sulfur in the egg white reacts with iron in the yolk
  • This happens with high heat or long cooking times

Is it safe to eat?

✔️ Yes, totally safe
❌ Just not as pretty—and the texture can be a bit dry or chalky

How to prevent it

  • Don’t boil too long (about 9–10 minutes for hard-boiled eggs)
  • Use gentle heat, not a rolling boil
  • Transfer eggs immediately to an ice bath after cooking

Quick perfect hard-boiled method

  1. Place eggs in pot, cover with cold water
  2. Bring to a boil
  3. Turn off heat, cover, sit 9–10 minutes
  4. Ice bath 5 minutes, then peel

So: green ring = overcooked, not spoiled 👍
