Here’s a classic Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy—tender patties, rich gravy, zero frozen-dinner vibes.


Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy (Serves 4)

Salisbury Steak Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works great)
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder

Onion Gravy Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: splash of milk or cream for extra richness

Make the Patties

  1. In a bowl, gently mix all steak ingredients (don’t overwork).
  2. Form into oval patties (about 4–6).

Brown the Patties

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high.
  2. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side until nicely seared.
  3. Remove patties and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).

Make the Onion Gravy

  1. Add butter to the same skillet.
  2. Add onions and cook over medium heat until soft and golden (15–20 minutes).
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions and cook 1 minute.
  4. Slowly whisk in beef broth.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  6. Simmer until gravy thickens.

Simmer Together

  1. Return patties to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over them.
  3. Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes, until patties are cooked through and tender.

Serve With

  • Mashed potatoes 🥔 (non-negotiable)
  • Egg noodles or rice
  • Green beans or peas
  • Buttered bread to mop up gravy

Pro Tips

  • Want extra tender patties? Add 1–2 tbsp milk to the meat.
  • Want mushroom gravy? Add sliced mushrooms with the onions.
  • Want old-school diner flavor? Add ½ tsp beef bouillon or Kitchen Bouquet.
