Fried Potatoes & Onions are elite comfort food—simple, crispy, and impossible to stop eating.


Classic Fried Potatoes & Onions

Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold)
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2–3 tbsp oil or butter (or both 👀)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • Optional: paprika, garlic powder, or herbs

Instructions

  1. Prep the potatoes
    Slice thin (or dice). Rinse and pat very dry—this = crispiness.
  2. Start the potatoes
    Heat oil in a wide skillet over medium-high.
    Add potatoes in a single layer. Don’t stir for 3–4 minutes.
  3. Flip & season
    Turn potatoes, season with salt & pepper.
    Let them brown again.
  4. Add onions
    Once potatoes are mostly tender, add onions.
    Cook 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and caramelized.
  5. Finish strong
    Add butter or spices if using. Taste, adjust seasoning.

Pro Tips 🔥

  • Crowded pan = steamed potatoes (sad). Use a big skillet.
  • Cast iron = best crust.
  • Want extra crispy? Cover for 5 min at the start, then uncover.

  • 🥓 Add bacon first, cook potatoes in the fat
  • 🧄 Toss in garlic at the very end
  • 🧀 Sprinkle cheese and cover for 1 min
