Hamburger Steak with Gravy

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lbs ground beef (80/20 works best)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder

Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or beef drippings
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, egg, milk, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
    • Shape into oval or round patties.
  2. Cook the steaks
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
    • Remove patties and set aside.
  3. Make the gravy
    • In the same skillet, add butter if needed.
    • Sauté onions until soft and lightly caramelized (5–7 minutes).
    • Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1 minute.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up browned bits.
    • Simmer until thickened.
  4. Combine & simmer
    • Return hamburger steaks to the skillet.
    • Spoon gravy over them and simmer 5–10 minutes.
  5. Serve hot

Serving Suggestions

  • 🥔 Mashed potatoes
  • 🌽 Corn or green beans
  • 🍞 Biscuits or white bread

Tips

  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • A splash of Worcestershire sauce deepens the gravy.
  • Don’t overmix the meat—keeps the steaks tender.
