Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is ideal)
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon or yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Onion Gravy

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional: 1 tsp ketchup or soy sauce (adds depth)

Instructions

  1. Make the Patties
    In a bowl, gently mix all steak ingredients until just combined.
    Shape into 4–6 oval patties.
  2. Brown the Patties
    Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they don’t need to be fully cooked).
    Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Onions
    In the same skillet, melt butter.
    Add onions and cook over medium heat until soft and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
  4. Make the Gravy
    Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
    Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire, and optional ketchup/soy sauce.
    Simmer until thickened.
  5. Finish Cooking
    Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them.
    Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes, until patties are cooked through.

Serving Ideas

  • Mashed potatoes 🥔 (classic)
  • Egg noodles
  • Rice
  • Steamed green beans or peas on the side

Tips & Variations

  • For extra tenderness, don’t overmix the meat.
  • Ground turkey works too—just add an extra tablespoon of oil.
  • Want mushroom gravy? Add sliced mushrooms with the onions.
