🍇 Old-Fashioned Blackberry Cobbler

A classic Southern-style cobbler with juicy blackberries and a golden, buttery crust — simple, rustic, and absolutely delicious.

🛒 Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 4 cups fresh blackberries (or frozen, not thawed)
  • ¾–1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

For the batter topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the berries:
In a bowl, gently mix blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, and cinnamon. Set aside.
  3. Melt the butter:
Pour melted butter into a 9×9-inch baking dish (or similar size). Do not stir.
  4. Make the batter:
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk until smooth.
  5. Assemble (don’t stir!):
    • Pour batter evenly over the melted butter (do not mix).
    • Spoon blackberry mixture evenly over the batter (again, do not stir).
  6. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  7. Cool slightly before serving to allow filling to set.

🍨 Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream
  • Add a dollop of whipped cream
  • Sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar

💡 Tips

  • If using very sweet berries, reduce sugar slightly.
  • For extra crisp topping, sprinkle 1–2 tablespoons sugar over the batter before baking.
  • Cast iron skillet works beautifully for a more traditional presentation.

Would you like a more cake-like version or a biscuit-topped Southern style instead?
