🧀 Cheese Scones (Savory & Fluffy)

These classic cheese scones are tender inside, golden outside, and perfect warm with butter.

🛒 Ingredients (Makes 8–10)

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon dry mustard powder (optional, boosts cheese flavor)
  • ½ cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1½ cups (150g) sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • ¾ cup (180ml) milk (plus a little extra for brushing)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and mustard powder.
  3. Cut in butter
Rub or cut the cold butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add cheese
    Stir in grated cheese.
  5. Add milk
Pour in milk and gently mix just until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  6. Shape
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Pat to about ¾–1 inch thick.
Cut into rounds (or triangles for rustic style).
  7. Brush & bake
Place on baking sheet. Brush tops with a little milk.
Bake 15–20 minutes until risen and golden brown.
  8. Cool slightly before serving.

🔥 Tips for Perfect Scones

  • Keep butter cold for flaky texture.
  • Don’t twist the cutter — it prevents rising.
  • Add extras: chopped chives, cooked bacon bits, or a pinch of cayenne.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Serve warm with butter
  • Great with soup or chili
  • Split and toast leftovers the next day

If you’d like, I can give you a traditional British-style version or a softer café-style version 😊
