Southern-Style Hamburger Steak

Posted on January 22, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Southern-Style Hamburger Steak—juicy patties smothered in rich onion gravy 🍽️

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed saltines
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder

Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil (use drippings if possible)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1½–2 cups beef broth
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Optional: splash of Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
In a bowl, mix ground beef, chopped onion, egg, milk, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
    Form into 4–5 oval patties.
  2. Brown the steaks
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
  3. Cook the onions
In the same skillet, add butter if needed. Sauté sliced onions until soft and golden.
  4. Make the gravy
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire if using.
  5. Simmer
Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes, until gravy thickens and patties are cooked through.

Serve With

  • Mashed potatoes (classic)
  • Rice
  • Buttered green beans or collard greens
  • Biscuits or cornbread

If you want, I can share a cracker-style diner version, a slow-cooker method, or a creamier gravy variation.
