Don’t throw away the detergent caps, they could be worth gold reused this way

Posted on February 19, 2026 by Admin

Don’t throw away those plastic detergent caps! While they’re not literally “worth gold,” they can be surprisingly useful around the house. Here are smart ways to reuse them safely and creatively:

1. Perfect Measuring Scoops

Detergent caps are already marked with measurement lines.
Reuse for:

  • Pet food portions
  • Garden fertilizer (non-edible plants only)
  • Ice melt or salt in winter
  • Powdered cleaners

⚠️ Make sure the cap is thoroughly washed before reusing.

2. Seed Starters for Gardening

They’re small, sturdy, and waterproof.

  • Drill or poke a small drainage hole at the bottom
  • Fill with soil
  • Start herbs or flower seedlings

Great for windowsill gardening.

3. Paint Mixing Cups

Perfect for:

  • Small craft projects
  • Touch-up wall paint
  • Kids’ art projects

The measurement lines help with mixing ratios.

4. Drawer or Closet Deodorizers

Fill with:

  • Baking soda
  • Activated charcoal
  • A few drops of essential oil

Place in shoes, closets, or gym bags.

5. Mini Organizers

Use them to hold:

  • Paper clips
  • Screws and nails
  • Beads
  • Sewing supplies

They prevent tiny items from rolling away.

6. DIY Ice Scooper

Keep one in:

  • Ice bins
  • Pet food containers
  • Garden soil bags

Much sturdier than flimsy disposable scoops.

7. Drip Catcher for Plants

Place under small plant pots to catch excess water.

8. Travel Soap Holder (Short Trips)

Clean and dry thoroughly, then use to carry:

  • Bar soap pieces
  • Solid shampoo

Only if sealed well and fully rinsed first.

9. Sensory Play for Kids

Use as:

  • Sand scoops
  • Water table measuring cups

(Always supervise young children.)

10. Garage Oil Funnel Substitute

Cut the rim slightly and use as a small funnel in a pinch.

Important Safety Tip

Because detergent residue can be harmful:

  • Wash caps thoroughly with hot water and dish soap
  • Never reuse them for food preparation unless you are 100% sure they are fully cleaned
  • Keep away from children if residue remains

Before tossing them in recycling, consider whether one of these ideas could save you money or reduce waste.

If you’d like, tell me what kind of space you have (apartment, house, garden, garage), and I can suggest the most useful reuse ideas for you.
