If you have lines on your nails, it doesn’t automatically mean you have cancer — that’s a common internet myth.
Here’s what nail lines usually mean:
1. Vertical lines (most common)
- Run from the cuticle to the tip
- Very normal, especially as you age
- Similar to wrinkles in skin
- Usually nothing to worry about
2. Horizontal lines (Beau’s lines)
- Go across the nail
- Can appear after:
- Severe illness
- High fever
- Major stress
- Injury to the nail
- These reflect a temporary interruption in nail growth
3. Dark vertical stripe (rare but important)
If you see:
- A dark brown or black stripe
- That wasn’t caused by injury
- That is widening or changing
It can (rarely) be a sign of subungual melanoma, a type of skin cancer. This is uncommon, but it’s something doctors take seriously.
When to see a doctor:
- The line is new and changing
- It’s only on one nail
- The pigment spreads onto the cuticle (Hutchinson’s sign)
- The nail becomes distorted
Most nail lines are harmless. If you’re worried, a dermatologist can check it quickly.
