Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda

Wet Ingredients

  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

1️⃣ Prep

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour a 9-inch round pan or line a loaf pan with parchment.

2️⃣ Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa (if using).

3️⃣ Cream Butter & Sugar

  • Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time.
  • Mix in vanilla.

4️⃣ Combine Wet & Dry

  • Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture.
  • Mix until just combined.
  • Fold in chocolate chips or nuts if desired.

5️⃣ Bake

  • Pour batter into prepared pan.
  • Smooth top with a spatula.
  • Optional: sprinkle powdered sugar lightly over top before baking to get a “crinkle” effect.
  • Bake 40–50 minutes (round pan) or 50–60 minutes (loaf pan), until a toothpick comes out clean.

6️⃣ Cool & Serve

  • Let cake cool 10–15 minutes in pan, then remove.
  • Dust with extra powdered sugar if desired.
