Healthy Apple Crisp

Posted on February 9, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a healthy apple crisp recipe that keeps all the cozy flavor of the classic dessert but cuts down on sugar and uses whole ingredients. It’s naturally sweetened, uses oats and nuts for crunch, and is delicious warm or cold.

Healthy Apple Crisp

Servings: 6
Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 35 min

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 5 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1–2 tbsp maple syrup or honey (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp whole wheat flour (or almond flour for gluten-free)

For the topping:

  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup almond flour or whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
  • 2–3 tbsp coconut oil or unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the filling:
    • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, vanilla, and flour until evenly coated.
    • Spread the apple mixture evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Make the topping:
    • In a small bowl, combine oats, flour, nuts, cinnamon, and salt.
    • Stir in melted coconut oil and maple syrup until the mixture is crumbly but holds together when pressed.
  4. Assemble:
    • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
  6. Serve:
    • Let cool slightly before serving. Delicious on its own or with a dollop of Greek yogurt for extra protein.

✅ Tips for extra health boost:

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for depth of flavor.
  • Add 1 tbsp chia seeds or ground flaxseed to the topping for fiber and omega-3s.
  • Swap half the maple syrup for mashed banana to reduce added sugars.

If you want, I can also give you a version under 200 calories per serving that still tastes indulgent. Do you want me to make that version too?
