Here’s a simple, reliable way to clean dirty bed pillows so they come out white, fresh, and sweet-smelling 🛏️✨

How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows

What You’ll Need

  • Laundry detergent (your regular kind)
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide (optional, for extra whitening)
  • Dryer balls or clean tennis balls

Step 1: Check the Label

Most polyester, down, and feather pillows are machine-washable.
Memory foam and latex should not go in the washer (spot clean only).

Step 2: Load the Washer Correctly

  • Wash two pillows at a time to keep the machine balanced
  • Use hot water (best for whitening and odor removal)

Step 3: Add Cleaning Boosters

Add to the washer:

  • Normal amount of detergent
  • ½ cup baking soda (deodorizes + brightens)
  • 1 cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle
  • Optional: ½ cup hydrogen peroxide for stubborn yellowing

Step 4: Extra Rinse

Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all soap and residue—this keeps pillows fluffy and fresh.

Step 5: Dry Thoroughly

  • Dry on low to medium heat
  • Toss in dryer balls or tennis balls to fluff and prevent clumping
  • Make sure pillows are completely dry to avoid mildew

Step 6: Fresh Finish

Once dry, let pillows air out for an hour. They should smell clean and light—no mustiness.

Bonus Tips

  • Wash pillows every 3–6 months
  • Use pillow protectors to keep them white longer
  • Add a few drops of lavender or lemon essential oil to dryer balls for a soft scent 🌿
