Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Posted on February 21, 2026 by Admin

Keeping your bed pillows clean not only makes them look fresh and white—it also helps remove sweat, oils, dust mites, and odors for better sleep. Here’s a simple, effective guide to get them clean and smelling sweet.

🧺 1. Check the Care Label First

Look at the tag to see if your pillows are:

  • Machine washable (most down-alternative and many down pillows)
  • Dry clean only
  • Foam pillows (usually not machine washable)

⚠️ Memory foam should never go in the washing machine.

🫧 2. Machine-Washable Pillows (Down or Synthetic)

What You’ll Need:

  • Mild liquid detergent
  • ½ cup baking soda (for deodorizing)
  • ½–1 cup white vinegar (for whitening and odor removal)
  • Optional: a few drops of lavender essential oil

Steps:

  1. Wash two pillows at once to balance the machine.
  2. Use warm water and a gentle cycle.
  3. Add detergent + baking soda directly into the drum.
  4. During the rinse cycle, add white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment.
  5. Run an extra rinse cycle to remove residue.

🌞 3. Drying Properly (Very Important!)

  • Tumble dry on low heat.
  • Add 2–3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to fluff them.
  • Make sure pillows are completely dry to prevent mildew (this may take 2–3 cycles).
  • If possible, finish by air-drying in sunlight for a natural fresh scent.

🧼 4. Foam or Memory Foam Pillows

Do not machine wash. Instead:

  1. Remove and wash the pillow cover separately.
  2. Spot-clean stains using mild detergent + warm water.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda over the pillow and let sit for 1–2 hours.
  4. Vacuum thoroughly to remove odors and dust.
  5. Air-dry completely.

✨ 5. Extra Whitening Boost (For Yellowed Pillows)

For heavily stained white pillows, try this deep-clean mix:

  • 1 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • Small amount of detergent

Wash on warm with an extra rinse cycle.

🌸 Keeping Pillows Fresh Longer

  • Use pillow protectors.
  • Wash pillowcases weekly.
  • Wash pillows every 3–6 months.
  • Fluff daily to maintain shape and airflow.
