🌯 Homemade Hamburger, Peppers, and Onion Gyros

This gyro recipe brings all the flavors of your favorite Greek street food right into your kitchen — juicy hamburger, sautéed peppers and onions, and a tangy yogurt sauce wrapped in warm pita bread.

🛒 Ingredients

For the gyro filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced

For the sauce:

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

To assemble:

  • 4–6 pita breads or flatbreads
  • Optional toppings: sliced tomatoes, lettuce, feta cheese, olives

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Hamburger

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add ground beef, season with garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Remove from pan and set aside.

2️⃣ Sauté Peppers and Onions

  1. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil.
  2. Add sliced peppers and onions.
  3. Sauté until soft and slightly caramelized (about 7–10 minutes).
  4. Return cooked hamburger to the pan and stir to combine.

3️⃣ Make the Yogurt Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, mix Greek yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  2. Adjust seasoning to taste.

4️⃣ Assemble the Gyros

  1. Warm pita breads in a dry skillet or oven.
  2. Spoon hamburger, peppers, and onions onto each pita.
  3. Drizzle with yogurt sauce and add optional toppings like tomatoes, lettuce, or feta.
  4. Fold and enjoy immediately.

💡 Tips for the Best Gyros

  • Use lean ground beef or a mix of beef and lamb for more authentic flavor.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine vinegar or a pinch of cayenne to the sautéed vegetables.
  • Wrap in foil for easy handheld eating or meal prep.

This homemade gyro is quick, delicious, and perfect for a weeknight dinner that feels like a restaurant meal.

If you want, I can also create a sheet-pan version where everything cooks together for even faster cleanup.
