Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy 🍽️🍄

Salisbury steak is a classic comfort food that combines juicy seasoned beef patties with a rich mushroom gravy. It’s perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

For the Steak Patties:

  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 small Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 cups Mushroom, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 cups Beef Broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the patties

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix gently until combined, but do not overwork the meat.
  • Shape into 4–6 oval patties.

2. Cook the patties

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
  • Brown patties on both sides for 3–4 minutes each (they will finish cooking in the gravy). Remove and set aside.

3. Make the mushroom gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter and sautĂ© mushrooms until soft.
  • Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  • Gradually add beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer until slightly thickened.

4. Combine and simmer

  • Return the browned patties to the skillet with the gravy.
  • Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until patties are cooked through and the gravy is thick and flavorful.

5. Serve

  • Spoon patties and mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Tips for Juicy Salisbury Steak

  • Don’t overmix the beef—overworking makes it tough.
  • Browning the patties first adds flavor to the gravy.
  • For extra richness, add a splash of Heavy Cream to the gravy.

đź’ˇ Fun fact: Salisbury steak was named after Dr. James H. Salisbury, who promoted ground beef as a healthful food in the late 1800s.
