Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Posted on January 22, 2026 by Admin

Oh yes 😏 Classic comfort food right here—Salisbury steak smothered in rich, savory onion gravy. Perfect for a cozy dinner with mashed potatoes or rice.

Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • Âź cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: splash of cream for richness

Instructions

1. Make the patties

  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form into 4 oval patties.

2. Cook the patties

  • Heat 1 tbsp oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Brown patties on both sides (about 3–4 min per side).
  • Remove patties and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).

3. Make the onion gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add 2 tbsp butter and sliced onions.
  2. Cook until soft and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute to make a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and optional cream.

4. Combine and finish cooking

  • Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer 5–10 minutes until cooked through.

5. Serve

  • Over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Pro Tips

  • Extra juicy patties: Don’t overmix the beef; gently combine ingredients.
  • Gravy boost: Add a splash of red wine or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard.
  • Make-ahead: Patties can be formed and refrigerated up to a day in advance; gravy can also be prepped and reheated.

If you want, I can give a “restaurant-style” Salisbury steak version with caramelized onions, mushroom gravy, and extra buttery mashed potatoes—takes it next-level comfort food style 😏🍴.

Do you want me to do that?
