Seven-Layer Salad

Posted on January 24, 2026 by Admin

A Seven-Layer Salad is a classic layered salad, perfect for gatherings, picnics, or as a side dish for any meal. It’s super colorful, crunchy, and creamy, with a variety of textures and flavors. The beauty of this salad is that you can customize it based on your preferences, but the traditional version usually includes a few core ingredients.

Here’s a classic recipe for a Seven-Layer Salad:

Ingredients:

  • 1 head of iceberg lettuce (chopped into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 cup frozen peas, thawed (or use fresh peas)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and mozzarella)
  • 1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup cooked bacon, crumbled (or use turkey bacon for a lighter version)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (or use Greek yogurt for a lighter alternative)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese (for topping)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Layer the ingredients:
    • Start by placing the chopped iceberg lettuce at the bottom of a large trifle dish or a clear glass bowl. This will be your base layer.
    • Next, layer the peas evenly on top of the lettuce.
    • Then add the shredded cheddar cheese as the next layer.
    • Follow with the red onion layer, spreading it out evenly over the cheese.
    • After the onion, add the crumbled bacon (make sure it’s well-cooked and crispy).
  2. Make the dressing:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, and white vinegar until smooth. Taste and adjust with a pinch of salt and pepper if needed.
    • Spread the dressing evenly over the top of the bacon layer. It will create a creamy layer that holds the salad together.
  3. Top with Parmesan:
    • Sprinkle the shredded Parmesan cheese over the top of the dressing.
  4. Chill:
    • Cover the salad with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 2-4 hours (or overnight). This helps the flavors meld together and makes it easier to serve.
  5. Serve:
    • When ready to serve, gently mix the layers together or serve as-is for a beautiful layered presentation.

Optional Add-ins/Variations:

  • Boiled eggs: Layer hard-boiled eggs (sliced) on top of the bacon for extra protein and richness.
  • Tomatoes: Add a layer of diced tomatoes for some freshness and color.
  • Cucumbers: Thinly slice some cucumbers for a bit of crunch.
  • Avocado: Add a layer of sliced avocado for a creamy texture.
  • Use different greens: While iceberg lettuce is traditional, you can mix in some spinach, arugula, or romaine for variety.

Serving Suggestions:

This salad is rich and satisfying on its own, but it pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, sandwiches, or BBQ dishes. It’s the kind of salad that can easily steal the show at potlucks or holiday feasts!

What do you think? Would you add any personal twists to the layers?
