Here’s a classic Southern-Style Hamburger Steak—juicy patties smothered in rich onion gravy 🍽️
Ingredients
Hamburger Steaks
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk
- ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed saltines
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Onion Gravy
- 2 tbsp butter or oil (use drippings if possible)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1½–2 cups beef broth
- Salt & pepper, to taste
- Optional: splash of Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Make the patties
In a bowl, mix ground beef, chopped onion, egg, milk, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Form into 4–5 oval patties. - Brown the steaks
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy). - Cook the onions
In the same skillet, add butter if needed. Sauté sliced onions until soft and golden. - Make the gravy
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire if using. - Simmer
Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes, until gravy thickens and patties are cooked through.
Serve With
- Mashed potatoes (classic)
- Rice
- Buttered green beans or collard greens
- Biscuits or cornbread
If you want, I can share a cracker-style diner version, a slow-cooker method, or a creamier gravy variation.
