Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to make your bed pillows white, fresh, and sweet-smelling again:

1. Check the Care Label

  • Most pillows are either machine-washable (cotton, polyester) or spot-clean only (memory foam, latex).
  • Never submerge memory foam in water—it can ruin the structure.

2. Remove Pillowcases and Covers

  • Strip the pillow of all cases, protectors, or decorative covers.
  • Wash these separately according to their care instructions.

3. Pre-Treat Stains (Optional)

  • For yellow sweat stains or spots:
    • Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda + a few drops of water into a paste.
    • Rub onto stains and let sit 15–30 minutes.
  • For stubborn stains, a small amount of mild detergent can help.

4. Wash the Pillows

  • Machine-Washable Pillows:
    1. Place 2 pillows at a time in the washer (balances load).
    2. Add 1 cup baking soda + your usual gentle detergent.
    3. Wash on warm water (not hot) and gentle cycle.
    4. Add ½ cup white vinegar during the rinse cycle to brighten and deodorize.
  • Memory Foam / Latex Pillows:
    1. Spot-clean with mild detergent and warm water.
    2. Air dry completely.

5. Rinse Thoroughly

  • Run an extra rinse cycle to remove detergent residue, which can make pillows smell musty.

6. Dry Completely

  • Tumble Dry Pillows:
    • Use low heat and toss in 2–3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to keep fluffiness.
    • Ensure pillows are completely dry; dampness can cause mold.
  • Air-Dry Option:
    • Lay pillows flat in the sun. Sunlight naturally whitens and kills bacteria.

7. Fluff & Refresh

  • After drying, fluff pillows by hand or gently beat them to restore shape.
  • Optional: Spray lightly with a linen spray or essential oil mix (lavender, lemon) for a fresh scent.

Extra Tips for Whiter Pillows

  • Hydrogen Peroxide: Add ½ cup to the wash for extra whitening (safe for most fabrics).
  • Regular Washing: Wash pillows every 3–6 months to prevent yellowing and odors.
  • Pillow Protectors: Use them to keep pillows cleaner longer.

If you want, I can also give a quick hack to make even old, very yellowed pillows look brand new without harsh chemicals. It’s surprisingly effective!
